Typical server maintenance, server reboots, which implies I get disconnected from my IRC networks because I use a BNC on my server.
No big deal. ZNC quickly reconnects to all the networks, except one. Guess which? That's right. EFNet. After 10 minutes of 'connection timed out' and 'connection refused because I say so', it finally felt like letting me connect. And that's not the only gripe I have against EFNet. A non-exhaustive list: 1) Its amazing stability: Agent004 would keep going down until I fixed its auto-reconnect code. I run a similar bot on another network, it had the same auto-reconnect bug and it would stay on for ages. 2) No services (ChanServ, NickServ, etc...). Any decent IRC network comes with those services, but EFNet is still the Wild West of IRC. 3) Nicks limited to 9 characters. Would adding one character take too much RAM for their Pentium II servers? And more generally, EFNet is stuck in the stone ages of IRC. Okay, let's not make this a simple rant against EFNet. Instead, let's consider the possibilities we have for moving: 1) NoLimitNET, a small network I go to which is fairly good. Also, there's a WiiU hacking related channel there, which is more active than EFNet's #wiiudev. 2) #3dsdev on Freenode. For me, this one is a no-no. I would rather leave than go there. 3) Another idea? Post. The main issue is that the top hackers (who are also the most knowledgeable people) seem to be content with EFNet, so... bleh. |

As said on IRC i'm for a move but if the core presence does not move it is useless sadly. |

What about a bot in each channel that cross-posts messages from the other channel on the other network? That way it wouldn't matter which of the two channels/networks you happened to be on. |

Posted by profi200 that's the main issue, yeah, the core is perfectly happy with EFNet Posted by twocows this sounds like more trouble than it's worth, honestly |

What if the bot is down half the time or can't redirect everything because the network is splitted again? Welcome to EFnet. |

Posted by StapleButter It's the only thing I can think of that would allow for a transition to a better network without requiring everyone on one network to transition to the other. Posted by profi200 Bot would have to be hosted by someone with reliable internet. As far as the netsplits... well, you could choose whichever link is most reliable (if there is one), but worst case, everyone on the new network would still be in communication with everyone on whichever link the EFnet bot is on still. So there would be fewer people isolated than with the current case. |

Yeah, no. There is no reliable server on EFnet. |

just see the first post, you'll see how long it takes for my ZNC to reconnect to EFNet after deliberately disconnecting (not even a netsplit or anything)
it's not even something wrong with ZNC, it reconnects nearly instantly to all the other networks, but it needs 10 minutes or more for EFNet |

RizonIRC can be good, but we already have #3dshacks. So, NoLimitNET is the only good one left. |
